City of Ellsemere

Ellsemere is the last city of humankind - or at least humankind within Vernian. Originally the capitol in the centre of a fairly expansive country, all but the capitol was laid to ruin in the Cataclysm that saw magic devastate much of the land, leaving only charred ruins where there was remains at all. Ironically, while it was an overindulgence in magic that saw the human kingdom razed, it also preserved what was left of it, for the magical protective wards around the city are what allowed it to endure, damaged not not destroyed.[1]

Once a centre of trade within Vernian, Ellsemere has become more and more withdrawn, especially as nationalistic rhetoric rises within the noble class of the city, seeing the complaints of the other races that humanity was responsible not as a national shame, but as a means to galvanize the population against outsiders. As such, non-humans - while not denied entry - will be treated as second-class citizens by most, and if they go to the nicer parts of town, they are likely in danger.[1]
Despite the nationalistic, racist roots, Ellsemere remains a fairly industrious and prosperous society, within its walls and their protection at least - and admittance within them is often used to separate the "haves" from the "have nots" in its society, with a substantial amount of structures outside. One might expect a tent or shanty town, but such structures would never survive the storms, so at least there's sturdy habitation, if only out of necessity.[1]
Food shortages leave non-humans whom bring it often well-accepted compared to their peers, if not really liked, and the primary import of the city from those outside nations, especially the dark elven capitol whom remains their one major trading partner, is food and cattle. The dark elves prodigious amount of food leaves them the one race not the recipient of the Ellsemere nobility's racist scorn.[1]
